The San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins have made a blockbuster trade.
The 49ers are trading up to the third overall pick, and in return the Dolphins will be receiving the 12th overall pick, a 3rd-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and first round picks in 2022 and 2023, per Adam Schefter. The third round pick comes as the compensatory pick the 49ers received for Robert Saleh getting hired by the Jets.
As much as this looks like the 49ers are trading up for a quarterback in mind, Schefter notes that San Francisco traded up because they’re good with the options the will be there at number three. The 49ers will likely draft a quarterback at No. 3, but are still holding onto Jimmy Garoppollo for at least this season.
James Palmer of The NFL Network mentioned that there are a lot of people that have spent time with Kyle Shanahan and are firm believers in sitting a rookie quarterback for a year.
The deal got even more exciting, when the Dolphins then traded with the Philadelphia Eagles for the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft along with a fifth round pick.
The Eagles will get the 12th overall pick in return, a fourth round pick this year, and a 2022 first round pick. Philadelphia can also add a third first round pick based on Carson Wentz’s playing time with the Indianapolis Colts. Philadelphia gets Miami’s first round pick in 2022, which is not the first rounder that Miami received from San Francisco.
According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, the Eagles tried trading up to the 3rd overall pick with Miami, but they were only going to do it for Zach Wilson.
This pretty much solidifies that the Jets will select Wilson with the 2nd overall pick and Sam Darnold could be on the move unless New York wants to sit Wilson for a year.
To sum it all up, San Francisco will likely get their quarterback of the future, Miami only dropped three spots, and the Eagles are rebuilding for the future and collecting picks by dropping six spots.
