In 2019, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston became the first quarterback in NFL history to join the ’30-30′ club.
While the name sounds impressive, it’s actually the definition of inconsistency. In this case, 30-30 refers to Winston throwing 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season. Sure, the 30 touchdowns (33 to be exact) are impressive, especially in today’s fantasy football-driven NFL (he also led the league in passing yards with 5,109, for what it’s worth). 30 interceptions, on the other hand, is a painfully bad number.
As it turns out, Winston’s eyesight may have played a role in his tendency to throw the ball to guys in the wrong uniform.
Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported today that Winston, 26, recently underwent LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery to correct his vision.
Winston had been battling eyesight issues (nearsightedness) dating back to his days as a Heisman winner at Florida State.
Only time will tell if the surgery will help Winston as a quarterback, but according to Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians, the former No. 1 overall pick had no issues seeing the field last fall.
“He can’t read the scoreboard but he can see the guys in front of him,” Arians said in his final press conference of 2019 (via Stroud). “So he’s alright.”
Sometimes jokes (or since it’s now the year 2020, internet memes) write themselves.
