Future hall of fame running back Adrian Peterson is signing with his fifth NFL team as he enters his 14th season in the NFL. This time he will be playing for the Detroit Lions.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Peterson will be signing a one-year deal worth up to $1.05 million with incentives.
This news comes just a couple of days after Peterson was released by the Washington Football Club where he played for two seasons. Many people thought Peterson was done and washed up until he proved that he could still play at an above-average level.
In 2017, Peterson played with the New Orleans Saints for only four games before being trading to the Arizona Cardinals. Peterson only rushed for a total of 529 yards for an average of 3.4 yards per carry that season.
At 33 years old, Peterson signed a one-year deal with Washington in 2018 and rejuvenated his career. Starting all 16 games for Washington, Peterson rushed for over 1,000 yards for the first time since 2015. He added seven touchdowns to his stat line.
The future Hall of Famer would then sign a two-year deal to remain with Washington in 2019. Peterson rushed for 898 yards, five touchdowns, and a 4.3 yards per carry average in 2019.
Peterson was released by Washington after the franchise decided to hand over the reigns to their young running back talent under new head coach Ron Rivera.
In Detroit, the 35-year old running back will be reuniting with his former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell. The duo was together for four seasons with Peterson rushing for over 1,300 yards each year, including over 1,760 in 2008. Peterson also had over 10 touchdowns each of those four seasons including an 18-touchdown season in 2009.
Peterson will now be joining a very young running back room featuring third-year pro Kerryon Johnson and rookie back D’Andre Swift. Adding a veteran to that group was a great decision that will likely prove to be hugely beneficial for a rookie like Swift.
It will be interesting to see what type of role the Lions will have for Peterson, but one thing is for sure, the 35 year-old is only 1,053 yards behind former Detroit Lion great Barry Sanders for fourth all-time on the rushing yards list.
