The Arizona Cardinals have signed wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to a two-year contract extension worth $54.5 million with $42.75 in guarantees, according to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network. Hopkins will also be receiving a $27.5 million signing bonus.
This deal makes Hopkins the highest paid non-QB player in NFL history. The deal also includes a no-trade clause as well as a no-franchise tag clause, meaning Hopkins isn’t leaving the Grand Canyon State unless he chooses to.
Adam Schefter of ESPN mentioned that this deal will keep the star wide receiver in Arizona for a total of five years at $94 million and an average of $18.8 million per season.
The seven-year vet also negotiated his own contract after he told local reporters that he would like to join a front office after he calls it a playing career. By negotiating himself, Hopkins saved himself $1.635 million in agent fees (on the new money).
This offseason, Hopkins was traded from the Houston Texans to the Cardinals for running back David Johnson, a 2020 2nd-round pick, and a 2021 4th-round pick. The trade was widely viewed as a steal for Arizona.
Hopkins has been considered by some to be the best wide receiver in the NFL in recent years. In the last three seasons, the future Hall of Famer has totaled 4,115 yards receiving on 315 receptions, and 31 touchdowns earning first-team All-Pro honors each year.
Entering his 8th NFL season, Hopkins will join a receiving core featuring another future Hall of Famer – Larry Fitzgerald – and third-year rising star Christian Kirk.
Arizona GM Steve Keim is clearly committed to surrounding second-year quarterback Kyler Murray with the tools he – and head coach Kliff Kingsbury – need to succeed.
