The Los Angeles Rams signed All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to a five-year extension worth $105 million with $71.2 million guaranteed. The deal makes Ramsey the highest paid cornerback in NFL history with an average salary of $21 million per season.
The guaranteed money and the average annual salary are the largest totals for a defensive back in NFL history.
Ramsey had mentioned during this season’s Hard Knocks that he wasn’t concerned about getting a deal done before the start of the regular season, and he turned out to be right. By signing this deal at the age of 25, Ramsey put himself in great position to potentially get another massive contract by his 30thbirthday.
Since entering the league in 2016, Ramsey ranks 5th in both completion percentage allowed (55%), and passer rating allowed (76.5), according to Pro Football Focus.
Another fun fact is that the All-Pro corner has a total of 10 interceptions in his four seasons, but has also allowed only 10 touchdowns in his short career per Pro Football Focus.
Ramsey was drafted 5th overall in 2016 by the Jacksonville Jaguars and earned his first All-Pro selection in 2017.
In 2019, Ramsey had demanded a trade after having issues with head coach Doug Marrone and was granted his wish just weeks later. Ramsey was traded to the Los Angeles Rams for 2020 first-round pick, 2021 first-round pick, and a 2021 fourth-round pick.
With Ramsey solidifying one side of the field in the secondary, the Rams defense is dramatically improved. It’s safe to say with one of the best offenses in the NFL and one of the best head coaches in football, this Rams team is building something special for not only this season, but for years to come.
