The New York Jets have fired head coach Adam Gase.
In just two seasons with the Jets, Gase recorded a 9-23 overall record (2-14 in 2020) with no playoff appearances.
Gase was brought in because of his successful offensive background to help develop quarterback Sam Darnold, but things didn’t go as planned. Gase took over a team with the 23rd ranked NFL offense and proceeded to guide the Gang Green to becoming the worst offense in the league.
In 2019, New York owned the 31st ranked offense followed by the 32nd in 2020.
Gase, who is known for having a larger ego than most people like, didn’t get along with his defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, another coach with a big personality. This led to Gase firing Williams after one of the worst defensive plays in NFL history — an all-out blitz against the Raiders as they scored in the final seconds in a Hail Mary type situation.
New York will retain general manager Joe Douglas with the plan of getting on the same page and figuring out what to do with the 2nd overall pick in the NFL Draft.
The big question will be: Do the Jets keep Sam Darnold or draft Justin Fields or Zach Wilson?
According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, the Jets would have likely fired Gase after their week 16 game, but instead they upset Cleveland.
The hot names that stand out for the Jets are Eric Bienemy, Arthur Smith, Don Martindale, and Brandon Staley. New York could also look at the college level for as well with guys like Matt Campbell, Dan Mullen, or even Pat Fitzgerald standing out as possibilities.
Before hiring Gase, the Jets had put in a request for Campbell, but were denied an interview, according to Rapoport.
Gase has had plenty of success as an offensive coordinator while working with future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning in 2013 and 2014. Gase then went with head coach John Fox to Chicago and helped Jay Cutler have arguably the best season of his career.
The Dolphins then hired Gase in 2016, and Miami snuck into the playoffs with a 10-6 record. Ryan Tannehill would win eight of those games before getting injured. Miami ultimately lost in the playoffs with Matt Moore playing quarterback in that game.
It’s unclear right now if Gase will get a job in the NFL in 2021, but more than likely 2022 as an offensive coordinator. Don’t forget Peyton Manning has some pull in the NFL and would more than likely put a good word in for Gase.
