The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a four-year deal with quarterback Dak Prescott. The deal is worth a total of $160 million with $126 million of it guaranteed. The deal could get up to $164 million with the way the contract is structured for the future.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Prescott will be receiving the biggest signing bonus in NFL history of $66 million and a total of $75 million due in year one. Prescott will also have a no-trade clause in his contract.
This deal will also help the Cowboys with their salary cap situation this season, because the franchise tag for Prescott would’ve been $37.7 million, but instead Prescott’s cap hit will be $22.2 million.
In the end Prescott got the four-year deal that he wanted and once his contract is up, he will be only 31-years old giving him the opportunity to sign another long-term monster contract.
These negotiations took about three seasons to get done after both sides agreed that they wanted a long-term deal.
Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation in his right ankle in the Cowboys Week 5 game against the New York Giants last fall.
The Dallas quarterback has played well in the regular season with his career passing percentage of 66.0. Prescott has not allowed the Cowboys to finish a season under the .500 mark when he’s started in all 16 games of that season. The two-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 106 touchdowns and only thrown 40 interceptions. Prescott also has led the Cowboys on 15 game-winning drives.
The 1-2 overall playoff record isn’t what Dallas fans want to see and now that this big-time contract is in place, the expectations are higher than ever for the former Rookie of the Year.
The next step for the Cowboys is figuring out a way to remain under the salary cap and build an elite team around their franchise quarterback if they want to get another Lombardi Trophy in their trophy case.
