With less than a week until the 2021 NFL Draft opens another blockbuster trade has been executed. This time it involves (former) Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Brown.
The Kansas City Chiefs are sending their 2021 first round pick along with their third and fourth round picks in 2021, and a fifth round pick in 2022 to the Ravens in exchange for Brown.
The Chiefs will also get back a 2021 second round pick and a sixth rounder in 2022.
Brown played left tackle in 2020 replacing Ronnie Stanley after he suffered a season ending injury. Brown would end up being selected to his second Pro Bowl.
Earlier this offseason Brown had requested a trade out of Baltimore, because he wanted to remain as a left tackle (he had previously been playing on the right side for Baltimore). Brown is also set to receive a big-time contract making him one of the league’s highest paid players at his position. According to Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network, the plan is too have Brown play out the final year of his contract.
The Ravens will replace Brown with former Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Alejandro Villanueva.
The two-time Pro Bowler will be filling a major void in Kansas City after the Chiefs released both Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz.
Kansas City invested a lot into their offensive line this offseason, by adding guards Joe Thuney and Kyle Long for the interior part of the line. The Chiefs were also in serious contention to sign left tackle Trent Williams before the 49ers upped their offer at the last minute to bring back the star tackle.
It’s safe to say that the Chiefs learned a lesson in Super Bowl LV and were committed to rebuilding their offensive line quickly to protect their franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes as they get ready for another championship run in 2021.
