The Denver Broncos have traded for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
The Broncos will be sending Carolina a sixth round pick (No. 191) in return. The Panthers will also be paying a portion of Bridgewater’s contract. According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, the Broncos will only pay $3 million of Bridgewater’s $10 million guaranteed money.
Klis is also reporting that the restructure of Teddy Bridgewater’s contract will involve eliminating final year and $21M of his contract in 2022.
Both teams had been discussing a trade since free agency opened in March. Newly hired general manager George Paton is familiar with Bridgewater after he was with the Vikings’ front office back in 2014 when the team drafted the Louisville quarterback in the first-round.
Paton made it clear since the day he was hired in Denver that he wanted to bring in competition for Lock, and he did exactly that with his move.
This trade comes just over 24 hours from the start of the NFL Draft and the question now looms, what will the Broncos do with their first-round pick now?
It’s unlikely that Denver will use the No. 9 overall pick on a quarterback at the moment, but it’s not 100% ruled out. If Denver is still in love with a certain quarterback with the ninth pick, they could go ahead and draft him and attempt to move Lock. Detroit was interested in Lock when the Broncos were discussing a possible trade for Matthew Stafford.
Paton has also said that he has talked with teams about a possible trade back in the first-round to collect more picks. If Denver stays put they can go ahead and draft Micah Parsons as the top rated linebacker or one of the top tackles in Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. Don’t rule out a cornerback either for the Broncos.
