Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones will be facing his former college head coach Urban Meyer Sunday as the Jaguars will host the Broncos. Jones was asked about what he thought about Meyer having a disconnect with his veteran players.
“Am I surprised by it? No,” Jones said. “I just know how he is. I’m not going to go into great detail about it, but no, it doesn’t surprise me.”
Jones spent four seasons at Ohio St. under Meyer and knew how he coached. When asked about coaches going from the college game Jones added, “going from college to pros is always difficult no matter what the level is, whether coaching or playing,”
Jones added, “especially because a lot of his philosophies are college-based, and you can’t do that with 30-plus men or even 25-plus men who have been around the league and know what they’re doing now and are well established. You got to shake things up in how you coach.”
Reports out of Jacksonville have not been good. Last week Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports has reported that after preseason losses, Meyer has threatened other coaches on the staff about their job security. When losing games, Meyer has tried taking over drills in practice, per La Canfora.
A source has told me that talking with people down in Jacksonville, Meyer has even tried running “Oklahoma drills.”
After finishing 1-2 in the preseason and getting blown out in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, Meyer is feeling the frustration after being used to winning in college. Meyer has won three national championships as a head coach of Florida and Ohio St. in college.
Even after drafting a generational type talent at quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, many people believe that Meyer could be one and done as the head coach of the Jaguars. It’s fair to say that Meyer better win quick and now.
