You can either let Dave Portnoy into your “fan cave,” and be accosted for the entirety of a Monday Night Football game or deny a $250,000 donation to Covid-19 relief.
Similarly, an executioner gives you the options to be sent to the gallows or death by firing squad. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has unfortunately found himself in one of these lose-lose situations.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy (a.k.a, “El Presidente” or “El Pres”) tweeted Sunday that he was the sole winner of the NFL auction to watch a Monday Night Football game with Goodell in his personal “fan cave.”
Portnoy stated that his winning offer of a quarter of a million dollars was enough to secure the bid. In an “Emergency Press Conference” on Sunday he explained he is happy to donate the sum in order to have the opportunity to chat with the commissioner.
Portnoy and Goodell’s turbulent relationship
In 2015, Portnoy and Barstool Sports made national headlines when they held a sit-in at the NFL office in Manhattan, protesting the suspension and fine of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots after the “deflategate” controversy.
Soon thereafter, Barstool Sports began selling thousands of Roger Goodell clown t-shirts that quickly became the symbol for the commissioner’s tenure amongst some NFL fans. His main grievance centers around the anti-Patriot and anti-Tom Brady slant that he believes the NFL and Goodell share.
In 2015, Portnoy was literally carried out of Super Bowl LII by NFL staff in handcuffs while dawning a mustached disguise. The week before, he was escorted from Super Bowl media day after NFL security was alerted of his presence at the event.
El Pres has continued to be Roger Goodell’s most outspoken troll, and Goodell’s taken the bait every time.
Portnoy went on New York’s WFAN Sports radio with Boomer and Gio to discuss the auction.
“He could’ve disarmed this thing a million different times, a million different ways by really just ignoring us [Barstool] to be totally honest,” says Portnoy. “Either he doesn’t let it happen and its a win or he lets it happen and its a win that way.”
Portnoy told Boomer and Gio that he will not hold back if the auction prize goes as planned.
“I am going to ask questions that lots of fans, not just myself and fans of the Patriots, would like answers to.”
It’s hard to believe that Roger Goodell and his advisors will let this go as planned, and Portnoy assured his followers that the two will not be passing the peace pipe in Roger’s fan cave.
Goodell: “Hey Dave I’m hoping we can keep it civil in my fan cave while we watc……”
Portnoy:
Roger Goodell and the NFL have tried to rid themselves of their Dave Portnoy problem for nearly five years. They’ve had him arrested, blacklisted, and blackballed — yet Portnoy’s voice continues to grow.
This time, Goodell is the one in handcuffs.
