The Denver Broncos will officially have breakout defensive end Shelby Harris for another season.
Harris has reportedly agreed to sign with the Denver Broncos for $2.5 million dollars in guaranteed money according to the Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. Quite a deal for General Manager John Elway.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Harris’ football career is far from the days of being in constant practice squad limbo.
In college, Harris was kicked off of two teams in his four years of collegiate play, once with Wisconsin for violating team rules, and another with Illinois State for conduct detrimental to the team.
The Oakland Raiders overlooked the question marks and drafted him in the seventh round in 2014, despite sitting out the entire 2013 season with Illinois State.
Harris played in just eight games before he signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos in 2017. Harris’ undeniable physical talent finally came to the forefront as the defensive end had a penchant for making big-time plays in big moments.
In an interview with Ian Rapoport on the RapSheet and Friends podcast, Harris reflected on a game-winning blocked field goal he recorded against the Chargers in his first year with the Broncos.
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m making plays on Monday Night Football.’ And that’s really the evolution of my career. It’s been from that one game-winning play to I’ve had one every year since I’ve been in Denver. Denver’s a really special place to me, it’s really the jump of my career and we’re [in] Year 4. It’s really special and my family’s so grateful for Denver, that’s why we want to give them a shot. Make a market-value offer, I’m there.”
However, Harris made it abundantly clear that he was looking to get paid after his breakout year with the Broncos in 2019. In the offseason, Harris signed with powerhouse sports agent Drew Rosenhaus.
“This is not for me, this is for my kids, for my kids’ kids and I want to make sure that they’re OK, regardless, know what I mean? It means a little bit more to me, I want to stay in Denver but, at the end of the day, I understand that there’s a chance it could not happen,” Harris told Rapoport.
Despite this, Harris will be returning to Mile High under a very team friendly deal. Only further increasing the odds he will line up alongside free agent Derek Wolfe next season.
In his three years in Denver Harris recorded 122 tackles and 13 sacks — 6 of which came in 2019.
