The Denver Nuggets have taken a huge blow to their roster after guard Jamal Murray suffered a torn ACL in the final minutes of Monday night’s game against the Golden St. Warriors. Denver will now be without Murray for their potential championship push.
In the fourth quarter, Murray was driving to the hoop and made a hard step with his left leg when attempting a layup and went straight to the ground in pain. Murray will be out indefinitely the team announced Tuesday.
Denver has won nine of their last 12 games including eight straight wins after the NBA trade deadline. The Nuggets currently own the fourth-best record in the Western Conference and have been climbing in the standings. If the regular season ended right now the Nuggets would take on the fifth-place, and defending NBA champion, Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs.
Murray was having a career year averaging 21.2 points and 4.8 assists per game.
Murray elevated himself to superstar status with a historic playoff run last season in the league’s Orlando, Fla. “bubble.” Murray averaged 26.5 points per game including two 50-point games.
As a team on the rise featuring leading MVP candidate in Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets will have to adjust dramatically if they want to continue to contend for their first NBA title.
