The Detroit Lions have announced that they have relived head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn of their duties Saturday afternoon.
Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell will serve as the interim head coach.
Patricia was in the middle of his third season as the Detroit head coach. The now former head coach had an overall record of 13-29-1 that counted for a 31.4 win percentage.
This firings come just two days after Detroit’s loss to Houston on Thanksgiving day. While taking over, Patricia never had a scoring offense rank higher than 18th. After having so much success in New England as the defensive coordinator, Patricia’s defense with the Lions never ranked better than 16th in scoring and 13th in takeaways.
General manager Bob Quinn was hired in 2016 and fired head coach Jim Caldwell in 2018. Caldwell led the Lions to a 36-28 overall record and a pair of playoff appearances. Quinn has gone 9-7 in both seasons as Caldwell being his head coach, but that wasn’t good enough when he had to hire his old friend from New England. Quinn’s overall record as the Detroit GM was 31-43-1.
Last year, Lions then-owner Martha Ford said that the goal for this season was to be playing meaningful games deep into December. The last playoff win for Detroit came during the 1991 season and their last division title was in 1993.
Quinn and Patricia always wanted to be on the same page as GM and head coach and now they’ll be on the same page in leaving Detroit.
Sheila Ford Hamp, who is the controlling owner, will now have her first opportunity in finding a new general manager and head coach for her franchise.
A piece of advice, maybe don’t hire from the New England Patriots organization.
