The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Doug Marrone.
The 56-year old had been with Jacksonville since 2015 as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach. Marrone would then be the interim head coach in 2016 and eventually was elevated to full-time head coach in 2017.
Marrone led the Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game in the 2017 season before falling to the New England Patriots late in the 4th quarter. That playoff run allowed Marrone to get a contract extension, but he would follow it up with back-to-back losing seasons in the next three seasons.
Jacksonville owns a 23-43 overall record under Marrone. The Jaguars lost 15 in a row in 2020, securing the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft along the way.
The Jacksonville job is considered the best opening in the NFL right now. The Jaguars had fired general manager Dave Caldwell back in November.
The best scenario for Jacksonville is to hire a head coach and general manager that would be in sync moving forward. Just like the 49ers with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.
The current leader in the clubhouse right now to take over is former college football head coach Urban Meyer. The three-time national champion is also reportedly interested in the Jacksonville opening. Meyer loves the opportunity of having the first overall pick and more than likely selecting Trevor Lawrence.
Meyer coached the Florida Gators to two national titles and reportedly still owns a house in Florida.
According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, if Meyer isn’t the pick in Jacksonville, the Jaguars will be looking for an offensive-minded head coach.
