Pro Bowl edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney is headed to Nashville to play for the Tennessee Titans on a one-year deal worth up to $15 million, according to multiple reports.
Clowney is one of the most high-profile pass rushers in the NFL and remained a free agent until Saturday night, when Dianna Russini of ESPN broke the news that the three-time Pro Bowler would be signing with the Titans.
Clowney will be reunited with Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel, who was Clowney’s position coach with the Houston Texans from 2014-2016. Vrabel would then become the Texans’ Defensive Coordinator for Clowney in 2017.
The New Orleans Saints were also a finalist to land Clowney, according to Russini, who also reported that the Saints had sent a member of their coaching staff to Houston to meet with Clowney and explain why New Orleans is the best spot for him.
Russini also mentioned that the Jacksonville Jaguars were keeping an eye on the Clowney situation even though the price tag was too high for them.
Lastly, Josina Anderson reported Saturday night that the Seattle Seahawks had made calls late that night to try and bring Clowney back to Seattle.
Clowney has 32 career sacks and 71 tackles for loss. His best season as a pro (9.5 sacks and second-team All-Pro honors) came in 2017 with Vrabel calling the plays in Houston.
In 2019, the Titans ranked 3rd in the NFL in sacks with 56. The pressure came from all over the field with 15 players recording at least one sack. No player on Tennessee’s defense finished the season with a double-digit sack total.
Tennessee lost Pro Bowl defensive end Jurrell Casey in a trade to the Denver Broncos for a 7th round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Clowney will be counted on to replace his production.
Tennessee also acquired pass rusher Vic Beasley in the offseason.
With a defensive-minded head coach in Vrabel, it only makes sense that the Titans would like to bulk up their pass rush if they want to make another Super Bowl run.
