The Los Angeles Chargers have fired head coach Anthony Lynn after their fourth straight win to close out the season with a 7-9 record.
Lynn will finish his career with the Chargers after a 33-31 overall record in just four seasons. The issue with the Chargers this season was that they couldn’t hold leads and couldn’t close out games late in the 4th quarter. Los Angeles blew 16 point leads in four straight games that resulted in three losses.
Lynn met with the Chargers brass today and we can imagine that he talked about how his team finished the season, but also had so many injuries this season. According to Adam Schefter, players projected to start on opening day have combined to miss 109 games, one of the highest totals in the league.
The Chargers only made the playoffs once under the Lynn regime with just two winning seasons.
Entering the 2020 season, the expectations were high for the Chargers and many thought they might be able to compete with the Chiefs in the AFC West. The Chargers then went out and signed big name free agents like cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and offensive tackle Brian Bulaga. Losing safety Derwin James early in the season hurt the potential of having a top 10 defense.
The Chargers opening will be one of the more intriguing openings due to the fact that they have found their franchisee quarterback in Justin Herbert. Not only is Herbert intriguing, but in the offseason, Los Angeles can continue to build on that defense and give Herbert some more weapons on offense.
Some names that standout that could potentially be hired as the next head coach are Arthur Smith, Eric Bienemy, Brandon Staley, and Matt Eberflus. Los Angeles could even go to the college ranks with guys likes Matt Campbell, Dan Mullen, or even Pat Fitzgerald. If the Chargers don’t want to hire a first time NFL head coach, they can go after a veteran like Todd Bowles, Marvin Lewis, or even Jim Caldwell.
Los Angeles will be holding the 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft and over $30 million in cap space heading into the offseason. Expect the Chargers job to be arguably the best opening in the NFL behind the Jacksonville Jaguars.
