The MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby has been moved and awarded to Denver, Colorado home of the Colorado Rockies. The game will be played at Coors Field, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
The original game was supposed to be played in Atlanta, Georgia, but because of controversial new voting laws, MLB decided to move the game.
This will be the second time that Denver, Colo. will get to host All-Star weekend since the city was awarded an expansion franchise in 1993. In that game, the American League defeated the National League in a high scoring 13-8 game.
Baltimore Orioles’ second baseman, Roberto Alomar was named as the MVP after getting three hits including a home run. Bartolo Colon was the winning pitcher for the American League even though he gave up three earned runs in just one inning.
In the Home Run Derby, Ken Griffey Jr. was given the crown after hitting just 19 home-runs in three rounds. Griffey hit just three long balls in the final round to get past Jim Thome. Hometown star Vinny Castilla appeared in the derby as well, but finished with just 12 dingers.
Other notable home-run hitters consisted of Alex Rodriguez, Chipper Jones, and the legendary Mark McGwire. The Cardinals’ first-baseman was a disappointment after hitting just four home-runs in a stadium where the ball should be flying out of the park.
It is uncertain how many fans will be allowed to be at the game as well as the derby, but Coors Field has been allowed to have over 20,000 fans for Rockies games so far this season.
The best players in baseball will be voted in to play in the game, but one name will stand out the most. That will be St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who will be returning back to the place where he won eight Gold Gloves, four Silver Slugger awards, and made five All-Star teams.
Arenado’s Cardinals will travel to Colorado in the first week of July before the All-Star Game.
At the time of publication, the game is still scheduled for July 13th.
