The New York Jets have released running back Le’Veon Bell, according to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter.
The release comes 19 months after Bell signed a four-year deal worth $52.5 million and $35 million guaranteed.
Bell and head coach Adam Gase never got a long from the get go. Gase was not happy that the Jets spent so much money on a running back, and Bell was never satisfied with his role in Gase’s offense. .
The three-time Pro Bowler met with Gase and general manager Joe Douglas, and the Jets front office said they would explore a trade and gave his agent permission to talk with other teams as well, according to ESPN.
After reaching out to every team, nobody was willing to make a trade due to issues in his contract. New York had tried trading Bell last season before the trade deadline, but obviously had no luck.
In his 17 games with the Jets, Bell rushed for 863 yards for 3.3 yards per carry and three touchdowns. In his time with the Gang Green, the 28-year old caught just 69 passes for 500 yards after being considered one of the best pass catching running backs in the NFL during his tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This isn’t the first time a Jets player has become frustrated with Adam Gase and the coaching staff. Earlier this year, star safety Jamal Adams was openly displeased with how his contract negotiations were playing out. Adams would request a trade, and ultimately got his wish.
The Jets would send Adams and a 4th round pick to Seattle for safety Bradley McDougald, two first-round picks, and a third-round pick in 2021.
Bottom line: things continue to get worse for Adam Gase and the New York Jets.
