It appears it is no longer Captain America against the world. It’s now Patrick Reed vs. everybody.
On Friday, Golf Channel’s Steve Sands reported that an altercation between Reed’s caddie, Kessler Karain, and a fan had occurred during play that morning.
”Everybody knew coming into the week that the fans here in Australia were really going to get on Patrick Reed whenever he played,” reports Sands. “It got a little out of control there after the match this morning. That’s when the altercation took place.”
This was an altercation that had been brewing for days.
Reed was caught playing in the sand (literally) last week at the Hero World challenge. After finding himself in a fairway bunker on the par-5 11thhole thanks to an errant drive, the 2018 Masters winner was caught improving his lie during a practice swing in the bunker not once, but twice.
In this video you can see him grounding the club while kicking up sand behind the ball.
The antics don’t stop there.
While on the 11thone fan yelled “miss” during a birdie attempt. After sinking the putt, Reed taunted the crowd by shoveling the air with his putter.
Twitter detectives came out in force, uncovering videos of Reed bending the rules in the past. Here is a 2015 clip of Reed taking a questionable practice swing while in a bunker.
The main difference between these two moments? Reed was caught.
At this point, Astros fans and Patrick Reed should just delete twitter.
Australian and International team member Cameron Smith expected the Aussies to call Reed out from the jump.
“I hope the crowd absolutely gives it to not only him, but everyone (on the American team) next week,” said Smith.
In an official statement by caddie Kessler, he remarked that some fans in Melbourne had taken it too far.
According to Kessler, a fan told Reed “You f*cking suck” while standing just three feet away. That was the final straw.
“I’m sure if it did get out of hand, I know I would definitely, and everyone on the International team, would tell the crowd to settle down a little bit,” said Smith.
Incredible foreshadowing.
