The start of the 2020 NFL calendar year is now less than two weeks away. Here’s a look at the projected salary cap space for all 32 teams heading into the offseason.
Salary cap data courtesy of Over The Cap as of March 4, 2020. Salary cap space numbers are reflective of each team’s Top-51 contracts.
Minnesota Vikings
- Salary cap space: $1,379,736
- Notes: Defensive end Everson Griffen opted out of the final three years of his contract, but head coach Mike Zimmer still expects him to re-sign with the Vikings.
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Salary cap space: $1,580,975
- Notes: The Steelers are prime candidates to restructure several veteran contracts before free agency opens. One avenue to clearing up some cap space would be to decline tight end Vance McDonald’s 2020 club option.
Atlanta Falcons
- Salary cap space: $4,322,104
- Notes: Due to their cap situation, the Falcons have apparently already come to terms with losing tight end Austin Hooper in free agency.
New Orleans Saints
- Salary cap space: $9,323,192
- Notes: The Saints still have to clear up enough space to re-sign quarterback Drew Brees (which shouldn’t be difficult).
San Francisco 49ers
- Salary cap space: $13,108,031
- Notes: The 49ers have to make decisions on standout defensive end Arik Armstead (franchise tag, long-term extension, or let him walk), and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (is he the long-term answer?).
Kansas City Chiefs
- Salary cap space: $13,674,494
- Notes: Locking up Chris Jones is the Chiefs’ top priority, followed closely by what will surely be a record-setting contract extension for Super Bowl LIV MVP Patrick Mahomes.
Los Angeles Rams
- Salary cap space: $14,791,619
- Notes: All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey is still waiting on a long-term contract extension.
Chicago Bears
- Salary cap space: $16,640,111
- Notes: With a scheduled cap hit of $15 million, wide receiver Allen Robinson is a strong candidate to receive a re-worked deal or get released.
Green Bay Packers
- Salary cap space: $20,460,042
- Notes: Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. Expect the Packers to be aggressive this offseason with Aaron Rodgers’ championship window closing rapidly.
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Salary cap space: $21,425,536
- Notes: The Jaguars are in the process of rebuilding their roster — they have already parted ways with Marcela Dareus and A.J. Bouye, and will reportedly cut ties with quarterback Nick Foles in the next few days.
Baltimore Ravens
- Salary cap space: $30,740,854
- Notes: Until Lamar Jackson lands his mega-deal, the Ravens will have the cap space to be fairly aggressive in free agency.
Carolina Panthers
- Salary cap space: $34,537,733
- Notes: The Panthers have to make a final decision on the future of Cam Newton.
Arizona Cardinals
- Salary cap space: $39,708,710
- Notes: The Cardinals are still rebuilding, but have enough young talent to be attractive to potential free agents. Expect the team to work on an extension for All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson.
New England Patriots
- Salary cap space: $41,659,589
- Notes: The Patriots’ offseason plans are dependent on Tom Brady’s free agency decision.
Philadelphia Eagles
- Salary cap space: $41,875,800
- Notes: The Eagles have a handful of in-house free agents to make decisions on, but they also have the cap flexibility to aggressively pursue talent on the open market.
Seattle Seahawks
- Salary cap space: $43,645,847
- Notes: The Seahawks will likely be one of the most popular destinations for free agent talent in 2020. A long-term extension for Jadeveon Clowney is still possible.
Cincinnati Bengals
- Salary cap space: $44,867,026
- Notes: The Bengals will reportedly use their franchise tag on wide receiver A.J. Green.
Detroit Lions
- Salary cap space: $47,713,544
- Notes: The pressure is on Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn to win in 2020. Expect Detroit to be active this offseason.
Los Angeles Chargers
- Salary cap space: $48,042,802
- Notes: The Chargers may re-sign or use their franchise tag on tight end Hunter Henry. Beyond that, they will be focused on finding a replacement for Philip Rivers.
New York Jets
- Salary cap space: $49,403,190
- Notes: Getting a long-term deal done for safety Jamal Adams is a priority for the Jets this offseason. They will also likely be active during free agency.
Las Vegas Raiders
- Salary cap space: $50,340,596
- Notes: Expect the Raiders to be very aggressive during free agency — particularly in their pursuit of players to bolster their secondary.
Tennessee Titans
- Salary cap space: $50,408,536
- Notes: The Titans have to make a decision on Ryan Tannehill in the very near future.
Washington Redskins
- Salary cap space: $61,078,737
- Notes: With a new coaching staff in place, there will likely be a lot of roster turnover in Washington.
Houston Texans
- Salary cap space: $61,286,117
- Notes: The Texans will likely be focused on rebuilding their secondary and beefing up their offensive line this offseason.
Cleveland Browns
- Salary cap space: $61,964,940
- Notes: 2019 may have been a disaster, but there is no denying the talent is there in Cleveland. With an abundance of cap space, they can add multiple pieces this offseason.
Denver Broncos
- Salary cap space: $70,043,214
- Notes: The franchise tag or a long-term extension is coming for All-Pro safety Justin Simmons coming prior to free agency. The Broncos will be one of the more active teams in the league this offseason.
New York Giants
- Salary cap space: $73,991,301
- Notes: The rebuild is on for the G-Men. With almost $74 million in cap space, they will likely add multiple pieces in free agency.
Dallas Cowboys
- Salary cap space: $76,787,123
- Notes: Franchise tag or long-term extension for quarterback Dak Prescott still looming. Also have to make a decision on their future with wide receiver Amari Cooper
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Salary cap space: $79,894,844
- Notes: Franchise tag or long-term extension for edge rusher Shaquil Barrett coming. If Barrett gets long-term deal, quarterback Jameis Winston could get tagged.
Buffalo Bills
- Salary cap space: $82,280,713
- Notes: The Bills will be aggressive this offseason. This team can catapult themselves into Super Bowl contention with a few solid acquisitions.
Indianapolis Colts
- Salary cap space: $86,162,964
- Notes: The Colts aren’t far from being a threat in the AFC. After settling on a quarterback, look for Indy to turn to free agency to bolster their defense.
Miami Dolphins
- Salary cap space: $88,075,174
- Notes: The rebuild continues. The 2020 offseason will be all about the draft for the Dolphins, but with this much cap space, they will likely add a high-priced free agent or two as well.
