With the beginning of NFL free agency looming, the Dallas Cowboys have made a decision on Dak Prescott for the 2020 season. The 26-year-old quarterback will be receive the franchise tag, keeping him off the open market.
Under the franchise tag, Prescott will earn $26.9 million in 2020.
Dallas owner/General Manager Jerry Jones and Prescott had little discussion all offseason regarding a contract extension. Jones met with Prescott’s agent, Todd France, for the first time since September at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on February 26th. The two discussed a long-term deal for the quarterback amid the Collective Bargaining Agreement discussions that were taking place simultaneously.
Jones told Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News that, “Don’t make anything of that, one way or another,” Jones went on to say. “That’s not what counts. [What counts is] when you decide it’s time to make it work.”
The team was expected to tag Prescott if a deal was unable to be reached by the March 18 franchise tag deadline. However, with two offensive stars in limbo (Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper), this complicated the issue for the Cowboys’front office.
With Prescott tagged, Cooper is now a candidate to either receive the team’s transition tag or test free agency.
“We’ll just have to figure out a way to [get it done]. . . .There’s no question it’s going to put on a bigger angst.” Jones said in regards to working out a new deal with Prescott.
The four-year veteran quarterback threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns, both career highs, in 2019. Prescott ranked 2nd in total passing yards and 4th in passing touchdowns amongst all NFL quarterbacks last season.
In Prescott’s time in Dallas, he has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice and was named the AP 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Prescott will continue to work towards landing his coveted long-term contract with the Cowboys in 2020.
