The 2019 NFL offseason was one of the wildest offseason in recent memory. The biggest storyline: where would Tom Brady end up after 20 years with the New England Patriots.
We all know that the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders were in the mix for the then 42-year old quarterback, but another contending team has appeared that they were in the mix as well.
That’s the New Orleans Saints.
According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, if Drew Brees had decided to retire after the 2019 season, the Saints had a plan together to go after Tom Brady. Per the report, the interest was mutual, with the six-time Super Bowl champion very interested in taking his talents to the Bayou.
Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Brady has made it known to several people that if Brees had retired and made the move to the broadcast booth, that he would have liked to replace Brees in New Orleans. Brady had also told Saints players about his interest in joining them knowing that the word would eventually make it to the team’s front office.
Rapoport also mentioned that the Chicago Bears were interested in Brady and even made him an offer.
Brady ultimately landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will now face Brees, Payton, and the Saints twice in 2020.
Brees and the Saints won the first matchup by a score of 34-23 on Sunday afternoon in the first game in NFL history featuring two teams with 40-year-old starting quarterbacks.
Both quarterbacks also happen to rank first and second in career passing yards and passing touchdowns in NFL history.
