On Monday, over half of the NFL’s official twitter and instagram pages fell victim to hackers.
Several accounts, including the official NFL twitter account tweeted:
“Hi, we’re Back (OurMine),” and, “We are here to Show people that everything is hackable”.
The OurMine twitter account was deactivated soon after. The group of hackers solicited their white hat services on the accounts. NFL reporter Dov Kleiman compiled a thread of the hacked teams through screenshots.
The NFL released a statement Tuesday morning regarding the incident.
“On Monday, the NFL Cybersecurity department became aware of a breach of a league-related social media account. Targeted breaches and additional failed attempts were discovered across the league and team accounts. The NFL took immediate action and directed the teams to secure their social media accounts and prevent further unauthorized access. Simultaneously, the league alerted the social media platform providers and, with their assistance, secured all league and club accounts. We continue to work diligently with the teams, which have resumed normal operations.
The NFL and teams are cooperating with its social media platform providers and law enforcement.”
OurMine has reportedly been inactive since 2017 “due to some issues” as reported by NBC news. The group claims responsibility for the seizing of social media accounts. The groups last hacking effort was in 2017, when they took credit for hacking the personal profiles of Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, Sundar Pichai, and HBO.
Hackers for the group had a particular interest with the Bears twitter account, trading LB Khalil Mack for $1 with division rival Lions, and naming a Saudi minister the new team owner.
The accounts were immediately frozen after the hacks occured, including the two teams competing in Super Bowl LIV in Miami this Sunday. It is possibly the best Super Bowl advertising we’ve ever seen, definitely the most illegal (sorry godaddy.com).
