The New England Patriots released quarterback Cam Newton last week after head coach Bill Belichick named rookie Mac Jones the starter for Week 1.
It’s still unclear why Newton was released. It could’ve been due to his play in the preseason, but it could also be that he was not vaccinated. Belichick said the vaccination issue was not the reason why Newton was released, but all that really matters is the former NFL MVP is now a free agent. Let’s take a look at some realistic landing spots for Newton.
Baltimore Ravens
With the offensive style in Baltimore, Newton could fit right in and be the backup for Lamar Jackson. Last season Newton ran with the ball just 22 times less than Jackson did. Baltimore offensive coordinator Greg Roman was in San Francisco with Colin Kaepernick when the 49ers went to the Super Bowl, in Buffalo with the mergence of Tyrod Taylor, and now he’s with Jackson helping him win MVP awards.
This could be the perfect spot for Newton to work with Roman and learn his offense on possibly a one-year deal. Roman could potentially get a head coaching job next season and end up taking Newton with him in 2022 — it’s always good to have great relationships in the NFL.
Houston Texans
There’s a lot of chaos down in Houston with the quarterback situation, but right now the Texans will open the season with Tyrod Taylor as their Week 1 starter. Houston drafted Davis Mills in the third round of April’s draft and he is expected to be Taylor’s backup season. After Mills, Houston has Deshaun Watson who won’t play this season due to his off the field issues. Adding Newton to the team would automatically make him the second best quarterback in the building.
Speaking of relationships in the NFL, the general manager for the Texans is Nick Caserio. Caserio has spent the past 20 seasons with the Patriots organization and most recently was the director of player personnel for the last 12 seasons. Caserio had an impact in the Patriots signing Newton and now he could bring in Newton to start off as the backup behind Taylor and eventually compete for the starting job down the line or possibly even into next season.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints had their quarterback battle between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill with the job going to Winston. New Orleans currently only has the two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster with Ian Book on the practice squad. The plan is to bring back Trevor Siemian to be Winston’s backup quarterback with Hill being the team’s specialist. With the creativity of Sean Payton, the Saints could bring in Cam Newton to play a specialist role with Hill as well.
With the quarterback position being uncertain next year for the Saints, Newton can sign there this season as a backup and then compete next season to be the starter if Winston doesn’t play well. Safe to say that if the price is right, Newton might become a Saint.
Some other notable mentions could be the Washington Football Team, New Orleans Saints, and Denver Broncos.
