New York Yankees shortstop Gleybor Torres finds it hard to believe the Houston Astros sign stealing operation was unique to their 2017 World Series championship season.
Torres believes it has been going on for the last 3 seasons.
“If you cheat in the first year and you won, why [do] you stop? It’s really it. You continue to do that.”
Torres didn’t stop there.
“It doesn’t respect baseball when you cheat,” Torres said (via The Athletic). “We feel frustration to see … we play our team like, legal, and Houston doesn’t play legal. It’s really easy to compete when you know what is coming.
“If I play video games with you, and we face the TV and I saw your controller and I know what is coming and I hit really well and win, if you tell me we play again, I’ll do the same thing because we’ll win. They did the same thing. They did it in ’17, for sure. They did it in ’18, and they did it in ’19. It’s really easy.”
However, Torres does not believe the Astros stole a 2019 World series birth from them.
“We lost too many opportunities to win the six games. We played really good baseball in a couple games, but a couple games no.”
The Yankees were knocked out of the ALCS by the Astros in 2017 and 2019. Torres participated in the 2019 series, which the Yankees lost in Game 6 thanks to a Jose Altuve walk-off homerun off All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman.
The walk-off by Altuve in 2019 has been a smoking gun for many “buzzer truthers.” Internet sleuths have dissected Altuve rounding the bases as evidence the player wore an electronic device to tip pitches before they were thrown.
While the MLB was unable to find any substantial evidence the Astros used electronic devices to steal signs from pitchers, many on social media are unconvinced.
While rounding the bases, Altuve appears to tell his teammates to not tear off his jersey before reaching home plate. Skeptics say it was an effort to conceal a cheating device, however, Altuve claims the reasoning was to avoid showing his naked chest.
Just recently, the second baseman made claims it was an attempt to conceal a “bad tattoo” he had just gotten for his daughter.
Chapman, who was at the receiving end of Altuve’s walk-off, sees the debacle as “suspicious.”
“And yeah, if you look at his actions, they look a little suspicious,” Chapman said while reporting for Spring Trainiing in Tampa, Fla. “At the end of the day, I just don’t know. I can’t tell you if he had the sign or didn’t have the sign—I don’t know. That’s a good question for him and for those guys. I just don’t know.”
Torres was recently named the starting shortstop for the Yankees this upcoming season.
The Astros and Yankees will face off on May 15 at Minute Maid park.
